Fantasy Sports Empires.com Blog for June 2, 2009

Thank you for those who have order or will order the 2009 Fantasy Sports Empires fantasy football draft kit and spreadsheet.  For 2009, I designed the spreadsheet so that it is more user friendly.  I wanted users to be able to enter in their scoring system just as they could last year, but I separated the league settings from the projections pages so that you could very easily make changes to your league settings and see them instantly displayed on all of the positional tabs.  Many fantasy football league managers play in more than one league and league settings may differ from one league to another.  The spreadsheet provides you with the opportunity to enter in your league settings and then view both numerically and now graphically all of the player projections by position.  You can then sort on the individual projections tabs.  I added position player projection graphs to allow you to better identify tiers of talents, projection drop-offs by position, and most importantly, allow you to make better informed decisions before your drafts.  The newest feature to the draft kit is the ability to do “what if” or scenario analysis.  Once you enter in your league settings and review the player projections by position, you simply cut and paste each player that you may draft, along with either my projections or your own projections to do a numerical and graphical comparison on scenario 1 vs. scenario 2.  This provides you with your team’s projected average points per week and per season.  It also breaks down each player’s average projected fantasy points per week.  Pretty powerful stuff!

In any draft kit, the most important thing in developing is to develop something with the perspective of the fantasy football manager.  The fantasy football manager that does their homework, is prepared, and is passionate about winning is the manager that does just that: Just win baby!  At the same time, it is very easy in this internet age to get caught up too much in the numbers and the statistics.  This often leads to “paralysis by analysis” and can do more harm than good.  Just ask the fellow league manger that got stuck with a pick because their time ran out on the clock as they fumbled through stacks and stacks of information.  The purpose of the draft kit and spreadsheet is to allow you to be equipped with the right amount of information  that you need to where you can quickly make informed decisions before your draft and most importantly, during the draft.  I’m often asked what goes through my mind during the drafts that I participate in (regardless if it is fantasy football or fantasy baseball).  The best analogy would be for you to imagine yourself as a horse jockey at the Kentucky derby.  You are winding your way in traffic from the starting line to the finish line.  At the beginning of the race, everyone in lined up in their staring gates.  This is just like you are with your known draft position.  And for the most part, the beginning of the race and the draft goes as planned.  But then as the jockey break at the first turn, things become constricted and you have to jockey for position.  You have to weave in and out of traffic, avoiding dirt being kicked in your face.  You position yourself as you weave in and out of traffic, with one goal in mind which is to never lose sight of the finish line.  As the draft proceeds on, picks become more constricted and players that you thought would be there at your picks are not, along with players dropping to you.  You have to be able to adjust to the ever changing draft, while holding onto the overall goal of finishing first.  The beauty is that no matter how many ranking you review or how many average draft positions are available, each draft is unique.  I’ve drafted with my buddies for years, and I have participated in a hand full of “expert’s drafts” and although the so called experts would never let a great player or a sleeper fall very far in drafts, there are always going to be decisions that you have to make when it is your turn on the clock.  My final piece of advice is to use the draft kit and spreadsheet as one of many opinions that you will use to construct your game plan for your draft.  There is nothing wrong with a second or third opinion.  Your goal is to be as prepared as possible, without getting paralysis by analysis.  There lies the beauty.  Just remember that if you have a question about anything fantasy football related, I am a simple email away!  My personal email address is: jeff@fantasysportsempires.com

Good Luck during the fantasy football season.  I will be here along for the ride!

Fantasy Sports Empires.com Blog for May 2, 2009

Hope you are all enjoying your fantasy baseball season.  I have been very busy in my life and ever spare moment of free time (which has not been very much as of late) has been dedicated to fantasy sports.  I am attending my first Atlanta Braves game in person on Sunday, May 3rd against the Houston Astros.  I am going with Larry Wachs, Rock 100.5 "The Regular Guys" radio show.  We have great seats and 755 club passes.  If you happen to go to the game and read this blog, come down and say hello to us.  We will be right behind the braves dugout in section 111L, row 20, seats 101-104.

I participated in my first fantasy football draft of the 2009 season.  Why so early?  Because fantasy magazines have to draft 1-2 months in advance of their publication dates.  That's OK as I have been working on the 2009 fantasy sports empires fantasy football draft kit and spreadsheet, so my top 200 rankings were already done and I used this during my draft.  I had the 12th pick and took Drew Brees with the last pick in round 1 and Clinton Portis with the first pick of round 2.  Why Brees so early?  You have to know your league's point system!  In this league, the league settings are 1 point for every 20 passing yards, and 6 points per passing TD.  Based on this information, there is a premium on quarterbacks in this league.  Although I never thought that Peyton Manning would last until the early 4th round.  This draft was for Krause Publication's Fantasy Sports magazine.  Look for the results at your local bookstore in mid June.  If you can't wait that long, order my draft kit and spreadsheet for only $4.99 with free updates all the way until the start of the NFL regular season, and the draft results are included in the draft kit!

I have updated the closer report this weekend and want to say that David Aardsma, LaTroy Hawkins, Huston Street, and Joe Beimel are the closers to pick up for the month of May.

Matt Laporta (1B, OF) is the hot pickup this week.  Grab him if you can and feel free to drop Travis Hafner for all of eternity.

I am off to New Orleans on business all this week, but will be answering emails when I get the opportunity.  Send your emails to jeff@fantasysportsempires.com

See you at the ball park!

Fantasy sports empires blog for February 15, 2009

Hi all,

Hanging out in Tallahassee, Florida for the weekend and it's raining here.  Still working late at night on my drafts and expanding the tabs on the fantasy sports empires spreadsheet.  I am also heading to best buy today to purchase a new microphone for the podcasts.  It's time for a new one and the other one caused some "crackling sounds" on the last podcast.

The draft kit and spreadsheet has been selling well this season, despite the economy.  I had my first order from Sweden today.  I did not even know that that they follow baseball in Sweden!

I have discovered a whole new world out there this weekend on facebook and have added myself this weekend.  I have also created a FANTASY SPORTS EMPIRES group on facebook for you all to sign up and to share ideas, post messages, make podcast request topics, and simply get to know othere people that are "friends of the sultan of stats".  Here is the link:
http://www.facebook.com/inbox/readmessage.php?t=1113619600120&mbox_pos=0#/group.php?gid=81492770184&ref=mf

I'll be doing a new podcast either Wednesday or Thursday of this week.  As always, keep sending me your ideas on what you would like to hear on the weekly podcasts.  My email is jeff@fantasysportsempires.com.

February 7, 2008 - Recap and Analysis of my recent Fantasy Phenoms mock draft on Mock Draft Central

Recap and Analysis of my February 4, 2009 Fantasy Phenoms mock draft on Mock Draft Central

By Jeff Boggis “The Sultan of Stats” – Fantasy Sports Empires.com

I had the 4th pick overall in this 12 team draft.  About 5 minutes before the draft, my laptop froze up and it took my roughly 10 minutes to get back into the draft.  Rule #1 is always pre-rank your players!  Luckily for me, I pre-ranked my players for this draft and landed the person that I would have taken if I did not miss the first round of the draft.

Draft Strategy – Power early and often, followed by a top relief pitcher.  Spend the middle and late rounds filling in positions, looking for speed, starting pitchers, and taking value picks if applicable.

Round 1 – Albert Pujols (1B – STL) – I could have taken either Pujols or David Wright here, but I value Pujols slightly more here as he is simply the best hitter in baseball.  He makes a solid foundation to build my team around.  My projections:  111 runs, 43 HRs, 126 RBIs, 8 SB, .337 BA.  Big name that got away: Hanley Ramirez, SS, FLA.

Round 2 – Evan Longoria (3B – TAM) – I wanted to follow up my first round pick with either an outfielder or third baseman and Longoria fit the bill.  Some people think that Longoria is being drafted too high with a second round pick.  Not me as he is a superstar in the making.  My projections:  89 runs, 34 HRs, 113 RBIs, 11 SB, .283 BA. Big name that got away: Josh Hamilton, OF, TEX.

Round 3 – Carlos Lee (OF – HOU) – What do I think of Carlos Lee?  I almost drafted him in round 2, but there was a drop off at 3B so I was fortunate to get Lee in round 3.  A fluke hand injury cost him so stats at the end of the 2008 season and he may be overlooked in drafts in 2009, but for me he is a solid and reliable as they come.  My projections: 96 runs, 37 HRs, 123 RBIs, 6 SB, .306 BA.  Big name that got away: Justin Morneau, 1B, MIN.

Round 4 – Adrian Gonzalez (1B – SD) – I typically look for the best power hitter left on the board in round 4, regardless of position.  And although I had to sure up my corner infielder slot (CI) early in the draft, I was excited about drafting Gonzalez in round 4.  My projections:  101 runs, 35 HRs, 122 RBIs, 1 SB, .286 BA.  Big name that got away: Carlos Quentin, OF, CWS.

Round 5 – David Ortiz (DH – BOS) – Arguably my best pick of the draft.  Incredible value here in round 5 for David Ortiz.  Personally, I would give some thought to taking him in round 4, but there is too much talent to pass up in round 5.  The downside is that my utility spot (DH) is now filled by round 5, but it is a nice problem to have.  My projections:  98 runs, 32 HRs, 106 RBIs, 1 SB, .285 BA.  Big name that got away: None

Round 6 – Brad Lidge (RP - PHI) – My first 5 picks were used build a solid foundation for power and it was now the right time to draft one of the elite closers that were still on the board.  My projections:  2 wins, 42 saves, 101 Ks, 3.15 ERA, 1.23 WHIP. Big name that got away: Joe Nathan, RP, MIN.

Round 7 – Francisco Liriano (SP – MIN) – I waited on drafting my first starting pitcher until round 7 with Francisco Liriano.  He pitched well during the end of the 2008 season and is a nice starting pitcher to draft once the big names are off the board.  Let someone else use an early round draft pick for starting pitching.  What’s not to like in Liriano in 2009?  Here is a starting pitcher that can win more than 15 games, have over 200 strikeouts, an ERA under 3.50 and a WHIP under 1.20.  My projections:  17 wins, 0 saves, 215 Ks, 3.41 ERA, 1.18 WHIP.  Big name that got away: Joey Votto, 1B, CIN.

Round 8 – Michael Young (SS – TEX) – Arguably my weakest pick of the draft and if I had to do it all over again, I would have passed on taking Young in round 8.  He will provide decent numbers across the board, but I would much rather have drafted Jose Valverde or Yovani Gallardo in this round.  My projections:  88 runs, 14 HRs, 75 RBIs, 12 SB, .288 BA. Big name that got away: Vernon Wells, OF, TOR.

Round 9 – Victor Martinez (C – CLE) – I really feel that Martinez is being overlooked in many drafts this season and can have a nice bounce back year in 2009. Martinez is the only catcher that I have projected to exceed 100 RBIs in 2009.  My projections:  81 runs, 23 HRs, 101 RBIs, 1 SB, .301 BA.  Big name that got away: Yovani Gallardo, SP, MIL.

Round 10 – Ryan Ludwick (OF – STL) – Here is a player that had an incredible 2008 from a power standpoint, yet there are a lot of non-believers out there this season.  I think in round 10, he makes an incredible value pick!  My projections: 88 runs, 38 HRs, 119 RBIs, 3 SB, .276 BA. Big name that got away: Javier Vazquez, SP, ATL

Round 11 – Justin Verlander (SP – DET) – Which Verlander will we get in 2009?  Will we get the great one in 2007 or the poor one in 2008?  I am hedging my bets on more like the great on in 2008.  He has worked on his mechanics during the off season and I feel confident in making him my #2 starting pitcher in this mock draft.  16 wins, 0 saves, 183 Ks, 3.83 ERA, 1.29 WHIP.  Big name that got away: Torii Hunter, OF, LAA.

Round 12 – Huston Street (RP – COL) – My second pick of this draft where I felt that I had to reach for someone or draft someone that I will not typically draft this early in the draft.  The problem was that most of the relief pitchers were off the board by this time, and I wanted to draft at least 3 closers as this is always my draft strategy each season.  There are 30 major league teams and 12 teams drafting so you do the math.  There is a competitive advantage by drafting at least 3 closers in your drafts.  I think the change of scenery for Street will be very positive, allow him to erase his lackluster 2008 season, and save 30+ games in 2009.  4 wins, 32 saves, 79 Ks, 3.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP.  Big names that got away: Delgado, David Price, B.J. Ryan, Nelson Cruz, Matt Capps, Ryan Zimmerman, Brad Hawpe, and Kerry Wood.

Round 13 – Willy Taveras (OF – CIN) – I needed some stolen bases and drafting Taveras was always part of the grand plan.  He can steal 50+ bases and helps offset early round power picks that offered little or no stolen bases.  You can go with hybrid players and lose some power, yet add some stolen bases, or go strong on power and draft a one trick pony like a Taveras, Pierre, or Gomez.  Either strategy is fine, as long as you get to the 300 home runs and 150 stolen bases by the end of the season.  My projections: 65 runs, 1 HRs, 29 RBIs, 52 SB, .282 BA. .  Big name that got away: Brett Myers (SP – PHI)

Round 14 – Brian Wilson (RP – SF) – Wilson gives me my third closer of the draft.  I don’t expect him to repeat his 2008 numbers, but the Giants are an improved team and Wilson can make for a nice #3 RP.  My projections: 3 wins, 32 saves, 47 Ks, 3.64 ERA, 1.37 WHIP.  Big names that got away: Matt Wieters, Matt Garza, and Kevin Slowey.

Round 15 – Derek Lowe (RP – ATL) – Lowe comes over from the Los Angeles Dodgers and become the ace of the Atlanta Braves pitching staff for 2009.  He makes a nice #3 starting pitcher for me and you can see that you can still draft quality starting pitching in the middle to late rounds.  My projections:  16 wins, 0 saves, 154 Ks, 3.65 ERA, 1.27 WHIP.  Big names that got away: Bengie Molina and Jose Lopez.

Round 16 – Eric Byrnes (OF – ARI) – Eric Byrnes is the type of player that you can take a flyer on in the late rounds and see how he does during spring training and the early weeks of the season before making a decision to keep, trade, or drop.  I’ve drafted him now in 3 drafts and he seems to be there in the late rounds for the taking.  He is a potential nice hybrid player with 25/25 potential in 2009.  My projections: 93 runs, 27 HRs, 88 RBIs, 28 SB, .277 BA.  Big names that got away: Erik Bedard, Yunel Escobar, Jered Weaver, and Paul Konerko.

Round 17 – Ryan Theriot (SS – CHC) – I was looking for a middle infielder with some speed in this round and Ryan “The Riot” fit the bill.  He is a one trick pony, but I needed the stolen bases.  My projections:  88 runs, 1 HRs, 49 RBIs, 32 SB, .287 BA. Big names that got away: Chris Perez and Jim Thome.

Round 18 – Jonathan Sanchez (SP – SF) – He is my sleeper starting pitcher this season and I was happy to get him as my #4 starting pitcher this late in the draft.  He will flirt with 200 strikeouts in 2009.  My projections: 12 wins, 0 saves, 193 Ks, 3.87 ERA, 1.36 WHIP. Big name that got away: Jair Jurrjens.

Round 19 – Brandon Lyon (RP – DET) – He will start as the opening day closer in Detroit and makes the fourth closer that I have drafted in this mock draft.  I always like to say that you can’t draft too many relievers, especially late in the draft. There really was nobody else on the board at this pick that I wanted.  My projections: 3 wins, 16 saves, Ks, ERA, WHIP. Big name that got away: None.

Round 20 – Rickie Weeks (2B – MIL) – I really like Weeks to rebound in 2009 and could not believe that he was still on the board this late in the draft.  I will be more than happy to take a flyer on him this late in the draft.  He has 20/30 potential, if you can live with his batting average.  My projections:  99 runs, 23 HRs, 57 RBIs, 34 SB, .259 BA.  Big name that got away: None

Round 21 – Jeff Francoeur (OF – ATL) – Here is another player that most fantasy managers have given up on.  I think the power can return and he can have a modest batting average in 2009.  Great value pick in round 21.  My projections: 75 runs, 19 HRs, 86 RBIs, 9 SB, .267 BA.  Big name that got away: Gil Meche and Wandy Rodriguez.

Round 22 – John Smoltz (SP – BOS) – I have always been a big fan of Smoltz and was sad to see him leave here in Atlanta for Boston this season.  This pick was more sentimental than anything.  9 wins, 0 saves, 130 Ks, 3.85 ERA, 1.37 WHIP.  Big name that got away: None.

Fantasy Sports Empires.com – Fantasy Baseball State of the Union Address - February 1, 2009

Fantasy Sports Empires.com – Fantasy Baseball State of the Union Address

I’ve already participated in 4 fantasy baseball expert’s drafts this season and have a good feel for where most players are being drafted, along with an overall theme of the drafts.  As I have said before, you have to draft power hitters early and often in 2009 as power is the real scarcity this season.  You will find that if you decide to go with either speed or pitching in the first 5 rounds of the draft, you will be in dire need of power in the middle to later rounds and it will be difficult to find a decent hitter that can provide you with at least 30 home runs without killing your batting average.  I am also telling you that you can wait on starting pitching.  If you have ever seen one of my favorite movies of all time (Braveheart starring Mel Gibson), the Scots are battling the English at the battle of Sterling and the English are charging against the Scot Army.  Sir William Wallace tells his army of Clansman over and over again to hold, hold, hold.  The same analogy needs to be used when drafting starting pitchers this season.  Use the first 8-10 rounds to draft solid hitters.  You will be amazed at the number of starting pitchers that will be available in the middle to late rounds this year.  You can’t say the same for 30+ home run hitters in 2009.  Now did I adhere to this draft strategy in all four of my expert’s drafts this season?  Unfortunately I did not as I saw incredible value with the likes of C.C. Sabathia available in the fourth round.  But I can attest that in the 7 years of playing fantasy baseball that when I drafted a starting pitcher in the early rounds, I did not win my league.  I passed on some great power hitters and played catch-up in the league standings all season.  In 2008, I won the Fantasy Sports Magazine Experts League by drafting great hitting early, drafting 3-4 closers, and mixing it in with starting pitching in the middle to late rounds.  I was able to dominate most all of the batting categories, along with WHIP, ERA, and saves in the pitching categories.  I worked the waiver wire efficiently for starting pitching and beat the so called experts of CBS Sports, ESPN, and anyone with a website or magazine that started with “Roto.”  So when you are in your drafts this season, think of Sir William Wallace as yourself, and starting pitchers as the charging English army at the Battle of Sterling.  For those who have not seen the movie Braveheart and have 8 minutes to kill, check out the hold scene on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Omk32Jq4LY  As always, you can email me at jeff@fantasysportsempires.com and I will be glad to answer any questions that are either fantasy baseball or fantasy football related.  Continue to visit the website at www.fantasysportsempires.com for fantasy baseball and fantasy football advice.  I merged www.fantasybaseballempire.com and www.fantasyfootballempire.com into a single website.  I also did this for my podcasts.  To view the podcasts and blogs, please visit http://blog.fantasysportsempires.com/.  To subscribe to the new Fantasy Sports Empires fantasy baseball and fantasy football podcasts via Apple iTunes:  http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=299434717

May you win all of your fantasy leagues in 2009.  I’ll be here throughout the season to assist you along the way!

I have also included the entire chat transcript that occurred during the draft with the expert’s fielding questions during the draft.

Select this link to hear the Lenny Melnick, Rhett Oldham, and Paul Greco of www.fantasypros911.com analysis of the draft.  [Sultan’s note: Paul Greco mispronounces my last name throughout the podcast as Jeff Bogus instead of Jeff Bog-gis].  At least Paul Greco liked some of my picks.  And what made matters worse is that I have appeared on Rhett Oldman’s show a couple of times and Rhett didn’t even correct him!  He also mispronounces the name of Tom Kessenich of Fantasy Sports Magazine throughout the draft.  For the record, it is pronounced Kes-sen-ich, with the enunciation on “sen”.  I am bad about mispronouncing names sometimes myself, but how hard is it to pronounce Joy Votto?

Select this link to hear the Todd Farino, RC Rizza, Ryan Hallam, and Evan Dickens of http://www.fantasygurusradio.com/ analysis of the draft.
